Leadership Coaching – ESLS and External

Divider

ESLS will provide five types of distinctly different coaching services, utilizing a combination of internal and external coaches.  The type of coaching services required will be determined on an individual case-by case basis in consultation with an Executive Consultant from ESLS.  These five types of coaching services are available to all APHIS leaders:

  • Leadership Coaching - ESLS and External
  • APHIS Internal Coaching
  • Developmental Coaching
  • Situational Coaching
  • Transitional Coaching

Leadership coaching is generally a longer term process (6 – 18 months) that focuses on helping an individual “learn what it takes” for him or her to improve existing capabilities, set meaningful goals, and be accountable for his or her results.  A Leadership Coach concentrates on personal and professional success. How effective is the individual at achieving their goals and getting what they want out of life and work?  Coaching is future-focused, aimed at identifying and understanding barriers and designing strategies and actions to eliminate those barriers and improve effectiveness. Knowledge resides with the individual being coached.

“A helping relationship formed between a client who has managerial authority and responsibility in an organization and a consultant who uses a wide variety of behavioral techniques and methods to help the client achieve a mutually identified set of goals to improve his or her professional performance and personal satisfaction and, consequently to improve the effectiveness of the client’s organization within a formally defined coaching agreement.”

-- Kilberg

Leadership coaching is a facilitative one-to-one, mutually designed coaching relationship between a trained, certified coach and a key APHIS employee who is accountable for highly complex decisions with wide scope of impact on the APHIS organization, government, and industry as a whole.  The primary impetus for engaging in coaching is organizational performance or development, either of which may have a personal component as well. The results produced from this relationship are observable, measurable, and aligned with the performance requirements the individual or APHIS has established.

Leadership coaching takes on two forms for APHIS Leaders:

  • ESLS – This coaching is done by our ESLS cadre of Executive Consultants.  The benefits of this coaching include deeper agency knowledge and no direct investment dollars needed.  Be assured that your confidentiality is of utmost importance to ESLS.
  • External – This coaching is done by an externally contracted professional coach.  The benefits of this coaching include agency and functional knowledge and/or experience and the highest level of confidentiality as afforded by an external consultant.  The investment associated with this coaching assignment tends to be significant and will be covered by your program.

How does a Leader initiate the Coaching Process?

Individual leaders within APHIS are encouraged to contact ESLS for coaching support.  The Executive Consultants will work with individuals to determine the appropriate coaching resource; additionally ESLS may recommend and initiate coaching as well

Leadership Coaching - ESLS can come about in several ways.

  • An ESLS Consultant may begin a coaching relationship because of work we’re already doing with a leader in some capacity (i.e. facilitating a team start-up or team building session).
  • A leader may contact ESLS (main number or any Executive Consultant) to talk over any business Or a simple call to our main line or to any Executive Consultant will provide you access to situational coaching.

Leadership Coaching - External - The ESLS Branch will assist Agency leaders in obtaining the services of a “professional” external coach through a process of application, matching, and interviews.

Upon application and approval, ESLS will identify a pool of well-matched coaches from our cadre of professional coaches.  The Agency has established criteria by which the external coaches were selected including: experience, problem diagnosis, results orientation, familiar with industry and government, and academic credentials.  You as coachee will interview these potential coaches and select the best fit for you to develop a trusting and challenging coaching relationship.
