The U. S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has issued a bulletin regarding life insurance misrepresentations and deceptive sales practices. Please be aware of the following suspicious behavior.
Federal employees have been contacted by insurance company salespeople who may be misrepresenting themselves as either having permission from OPM, or the Office of Federal Employees Group Life Insurance (OFEGLI), or your Federal agency, to provide life insurance information to you.
The FEGLI program is the only government-wide group life insurance program authorized by OPM. OPM has no connection with, responsibility for, or endorsement of, any other life insurance product, whether or not it is represented as "supplemental" to the FEGLI program. OPM and the FEGLI program do NOT use sales agents or telephone solicitations of any kind. If agents are trying to sell life insurance to employees, they are NOT connected with the FEGLI program.
Commercial solicitation on Federal government property is prohibited by GSA regulations found at 41 CFR 102-74.410. Life insurance salespeople do not have permission to be on government property or soliciting employees on the job.
Employees are free to purchase any life insurance they choose, and while OPM encourages comparison-shopping, employees should do so knowingly, on their own time, and not because they were misled into believing the insurance was sponsored by OPM or FEGLI. This serves as a reminder to never give personal information to a solicitor.
