Examine household goods and decide what you wish to move. You may want to donate some items to charity or have a garage or moving sale. Moving time is a good time to "lighten the load." Contact doctors and dentists to ask for referrals at destination. Obtain copies of renewable prescriptions. Arrange transfer of school records. Some schools require that you furnish transcripts of school records. To be on the safe side, be certain to get a copy (they also require medical records). Remember, these will be required immediately upon registration at the new school. Do not put important papers in storage. These would include drivers licenses, passports, credit cards. Notify clubs and organizations to which you belong of the impending move. Transfer fire, theft, personal property, and vehicle insurance. Try to use up most food items before moving (including frozen foods). Acquire and complete change of address cards (from Post Office). Make arrangements for a temporary forwarding address at destination if you will not have a permanent address by the move date. Establish a file for all moving papers and receipts. If applicable, reserve apartment elevator for pickup and/or delivery dates. Sometimes it is neccessary to notify local authorities (police) regarding moving van blocking street. Gypsy Moth Inspection (if applicable in your area). Make travel reservations for the trip. Arrange to discontinue utilities and services (cable television, lawn service, newspaper delivery). Transfer charge accounts. Return library books and other items you've borrowed. Collect items you've loaned out and items in lay-away and cold storage. Dispose of flammables and hazardous materials gasoline, fireworks, matches, cleaning fluids, acids, pressurized cans, etc.) When in doubt of disposal procedure, contact local authority, as this varies in different locales. When possible arrange connection of utilities in new residence. Draw up a floor plan of new residence and indicate Placement of furnishings. This will be of great help upon move-in when there will be a good deal of confusion. If not possible, have an idea of placement prior to arrival of furnishings. Visit special people and places that hold fond memories. Transfer bank and credit bureau accounts. Set aside any items you'll need in the car. If traveling With children (large or small) keep in mind their interests and plan accordingly. Games, books, magazines, or items of interest to the child do a lot to make a long trip at least a little less tedious. Drain gasoline from lawn mover and remove spark plug. Take pets to the veterinarian for any required immunizations. Obtain copies of pets' records and keep with your other important papers. Prepare personal computer for shipping. Please consult your owner's manual or call your factory representative if you are unfamiliar with the procedure to follow. It is also wise to back-up your computer system and take software with you personally. Set aside jewelry, vital documents, tax records, valuable small items and family pictures to carry with you. Put cleaning supplies, toiletries and coffee pot in special box to be loaded last, unloaded first. Defrost, clean and dry refrigerator. It is very important to remember to dry the refrigerator/freezer thoroughly prior to preparation for shipment. Collect items to be taken in vehicle: maps, snacks, can opener, flashlight, first aid kit, emergency road Equipment, litter basket, pet food and dishes. If your pet will be traveling, think about the pet's needs upon arrival such as water, food, dishes and a treat. Introduce yourself to the driver. The driver is in charge of your move. If you have a concern about one of the people packing, or the way they are packing, communicate this to the driver. If you have a problem with the driver: CONTACT YOUR HOUSEHOLD MOVES COORDINATOR Moves are scheduled with reputable carriers who want to do the best job for you but we must contact them immediately if there is a problem. Accompany the driver through your house as goods are inventoried. It's a good idea to either be present during the packing and loading or, if this isn't possible, have a trusted person present if you must run errands, etc. This person must be adult, at least 18 years of age. We do not recommend this but if you must leave, leave for only short periods of time, keep the driver and the van line representative informed where you can be reached. It's advisable to be away for short periods of time only, just in case of a problem or decision-making issue. If you can't be present, be certain a trusted adult is present. Never, under any circumstances, leave the move crew alone in your residence. Why invite trouble? You may wish to make up a box with your essentials, i.e., coffee pot, bedding, toys, etc., to have the movers pack last, in the event you'll be going to temporary quarters. Be certain they understand they will be dropping this box off for you. Before the van leaves, walk through the residence to make sure nothing appears to have been overlooked. Make sure that the family gets a good breakfast. Delivery date/time will be pre-arranged between you and the carrier. Meet the driver at your new residence. Check for damaged or missing items. While it may not be possible to physically inspect the contents of each carton, be certain to check the cartons for obvious damage; tears, smashed corners and watermarks. If a carton looks damaged, open it and inspect the contents.. As your goods are unloaded, direct the placement of each piece. Make your presence known, but attempt to keep in the background. Make no unnecessary conversation with the driver or workers. They are paid to do a job and if distracted perhaps commitments wouldn't be fulfilled toward you and the Government. The unloaders will: lay rugs (area rugs -- no inlaid carpeting) set up beds, do a one-time furniture placement and hang clothing from wardrobe cartons. They will not: install or attach appliances, install fixtures, hang pictures, curtain rods, nor curtains. After you've unpacked, take all boxes, packing materials, and debris to one central location (perhaps garage), call the van line and they will make arrangements to do a one time debris pickup. For your information - the van lines recycle. Note: I cannot stress enough that we're only a phone call away if you have questions or problems of any sort. Before a situation escalates just pick up the phone and call.
