Scrapie Certification Program

We invite you to enroll in the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program. More and more sheep breeders recognize the value of participation in this USDA program to control scrapie in the United States.

Enrollment is easy:

1. Call your State/Federal animal health office and discuss the new “producer-friendly” program requirements. There is no enrollment or participation fee.

2. Arrange with that contact to obtain an identification number for tagging each sheep in your production flock with permanent identification. This may be either a tamper-resistant ear tag approved by APHIS, a flank or ear tattoo, or electronic identification. Animals under 1 year of age and slaughter market animals need not be identified. Record each animal’s identification and complete the Certification Program application.

3. Make an appointment for a flock visit by a representative of your State Scrapie Certification Board to review your records and current practices.

That is all you have to do to enroll in the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program!

What are the advantages for you?

• Better records for your business.

• Better future for the industry.

• Better prices for your sheep!
