APHIS and the General Approval Process

Other Agencies

It is important to note that APHIS is not the only agency involved with the importation of food products. The USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) regulates sanitary practices in the packing of meat and egg products among other foods. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in the Department of Health and Human Services, regulates packaging and labeling among other things.

The approaches, policies and language used for the importation into the United States of animals and animal products differ somewhat from those for the importation of plants and plant products. Therefore we will treat them separately. We will begin with plants and plant products.
