In April 1994, President Clinton directed all Federal agencies to improve program delivery to Native Americans in the 560-plus federally recognized Tribes. APHIS responded to this directive by establishing the APHIS Native American Working Group (ANAWG), which includes about 70 representatives from all APHIS program areas. ANAWG operates under the direction of the APHIS Administrator, Kevin Shea, and is chaired by APHIS’ National Tribal Liaison, Dr. Terry Clark.
ANAWG advises APHIS animal and plant health experts around the country about how they can better serve Tribes, intertribal committees, and related organizations, such as the Intertribal Agriculture Council. ANAWG also helps coordinate APHIS’ partnerships with Tribal governments.
