APHIS Records Management Program

The program is designed to provide APHIS employees and contractors the guidance necessary to ensure that our activities are documented properly, efficiently, and economically.

As the basic administrative tool by which APHIS does its work, records are a basic component of our information resources. This means records must be properly managed in order for APHIS to function effectively and to comply with Federal laws and regulations.

The program has three main objectives:

  • The prompt disposal of temporary records whose authorized retention periods have expired;
  • The timely and systematic transfer to storage of records no longer actively needed, but not yet eligible for final disposition;
  • The identification and transfer of permanent records to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
