USDA Animal Care is staffed by experts on animal care and husbandry who help lead the way in determining standards of humane care and treatment for animals. Animal Care works with states, regulated industries, animal advocacy groups and other non-governmental organizations to ensure the welfare of millions of animals.
The majority of Animal Care employees are veterinarians or individuals with education in the biological sciences who have extensive animal handling experience. Animal Care employs approximately 120 inspectors nationwide who conduct inspections to uphold and enforce the Animal Welfare Act and the Horse Protection Act. Animal Care also employs specialists who have specific expertise and experience with dogs, elephants, marine mammals, primates, big cats (lions and tigers) and other species.
