NVSL Diagnostic Bacteriology and Pathology Laboratory

The Diagnostic Bacteriology and Pathology Laboratory (DBPL) provides diagnostic assistance for bacterial and protozoal diseases by conducting serologic testing for the presence of antibodies to pathogens; isolating, identifying, and genotyping bacteria; producing reagents needed for diagnostic testing; administering proficiency tests for selected diseases; and providing diagnostic training.

The DBPL is a Reference Laboratory for the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and a Reference Centre for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO). Click here for more details. Some of the numerous functions of the DBL include testing for equine piroplasmosis, dourine, and glanders; Salmonella serotyping; cultures for the diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis; brucellosis reagent production; Mycobacterium paratuberculosis (Johne's Disease) serology and culture; Leptospira serology; and scrapie susceptibility genotyping. The DBL also maintains the brucellosis, tuberculosis, Johne's Disease, and National Animal Health Monitoring System serum and isolate banks.
