A veterinarian's work environment can result in their exposure to a number of hazards. Whether administering vaccinations to small animals, treating large animals in the field, or working in a laboratory— veterinarians are faced with potential hazards on a daily basis. Such hazards include:
- Mechanical (e.g., injured while using animal restraint equipment such as cattle chutes or a vehicular accident based on extended time spent on the road by large animal veterinarians),
- Chemical (e.g., chemotherapeutic agents, euthanasia solutions, disinfectants, formalin),
- Biological (e.g., zoonotic diseases), and
- Physical (e.g., dog bites, being struck, kicked, or trampled by livestock, needle sticks, noise, radiation, sunlight exposure for livestock veterinarians, temperature extremes).
