NAHERC was established in 2001 by USDA-APHIS to respond to domestic or international animal disease outbreaks and other disasters impacting animal health.
NAHERC is part of the National Animal Health Emergency Management System (NAHEMS), which is covered later in this module. U.S. veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and college students are eligible to join NAHERC.
As a NAHERC volunteer, you are considered a temporary Federal employee during assignments, which typically last 21 days domestically or 30 days for an international response. Travel and lodging expenses are reimbursed, and liability and workman’s compensation insurance coverage are also provided.
