NAHRS provides key information that is used to complete the 6-month and annual reports that the U.S. is required to submit to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Additional information is also used to compile the reports. The national summary-level data on disease occurrences that is provided to OIE is also available on the USDA-APHIS web site at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/VS/nahss/disease_status.htm. USDA uses NAHRS information in U.S. trade negotiations and to respond to inquiries or audits from trade partners. In these instances, NAHRS demonstrates the integrated, comprehensive, and transparent nature of disease surveillance and reporting in the U.S. NAHRS information is also used by the USDA-APHIS-VS-Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health to provide historic information on occurrences of reportable diseases in the U.S. For example, in emerging disease situations, NAHRS information may be used to provide background information on occurrences of similar diseases in the U.S. >> More on NAHRS data confidentiality.
