NAHRS - Participant Information

Submitting Reports Online
Using the online NAHRS reporting form is the easiest, most secure way for State animal health officials to submit monthly NAHRS reports. The online reporting system also provides State animal health officials with reports showing monthly and annual information about disease occurrences reported for their State, along with comparison information from the entire U.S.

NAHRS reports may also be submitted via e-mail, fax, or mail. Contact the NAHRS coordinator for more information.

Reporting Criteria
Reporting criteria can be found in the NAHRS Operational Manual and Uniform Methods and Rules (pdf, 373kb). Reporting criteria are also shown in the NAHRS online reporting form; when the cursor is moved over the disease number on the monthly report form, a pop-up displays the reporting criteria for that disease.

Report Dates
Monthly NAHRS reports are due on the 20th of each month (e.g., January report should be submitted by February 20th).

Modifying Past Reports
States should modify their NAHRS reports if new information is obtained on disease occurrence after the monthly NAHRS report has been submitted. Contact the NAHRS coordinator to edit a previously submitted report.

Data Validation
Information submitted to NAHRS is validated through reviews by APHIS-VS-National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) staff and, for APHIS program diseases, VS National Animal Health Policy and Programs staff. Information is also cross-checked with other published disease reporting sources such as CDC's ArboNET, ProMED, and official information posted on State government web sites. Validation information is used to communicate to States any potential discrepancies between information submitted to NAHRS and other published information sources. If a discrepancy is noticed, the national NAHRS coordinator works with State animal health officials to determine the reason for the discrepancy and if the State report should be edited. The State’s chief animal health official makes the final determination on data reported to NAHRS for that State.
