Outbreaks of FMD serotype O among pigs in Hong Kong are reported every year, particularly during the winter months (December – March). FMD control in Hong Kong relies primarily on vaccination of pigs with a multivalent vaccine containing several strains of FMD serotype O virus likely to be in the region (Feng et al. 2003). Other control measures include farm inspection, farm hygiene measures, import control on livestock, and slaughter surveillance (Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department, 2001).
The distribution of FMD serotype Asia 1 is so far limited
to Asia, including the Far East and the Middle East. A map of the distribution
