The Danish National Veterinary and Food Administration on Friday, July 26, 2002 confirmed an outbreak of Newcastle disease at 42 premises in western Denmark . The last reported outbreak of Newcastle disease in Denmark was 1998. Production of poultry and poultry products in Denmark accounts for less than 0.1% of total world production. Denmark ’s exports of live poultry and poultry products in 1999 and 2000 did not account for a significant share of the world export market. The predominant export markets for these products are the Middle East , Germany , and Britain . The only recent import of concern into the US from Denmark was bird’s eggs for hatching. In 2001, 4,680 dozen bird’s eggs for hatching were imported from Denmark . Through May of 2002, 3,781 dozen bird’s eggs for hatching were imported into the US . The USDA is preparing an interim rule that will remove Denmark from the list of regions that are considered to be free of exotic Newcastle disease. The effective date will be July 16, 2002 .

The Danish National Veterinary and Food Administration on Friday, July 26, 2002 confirmed via the Danish Veterinary Institute an outbreak of Newcastle disease at 42 premises in western Denmark . The last reported outbreak of Newcastle disease in Denmark was 1998. In mid-July, Danish authorities suspected an outbreak of Newcastle disease on premises located in the southern part of the Jutland Peninsula , near the German border. To control the outbreak, the chickens were destroyed. Also as a preventive measure, safety zones of 10 kilometers were established around the premises affected. Neither poultry nor poultry equipment may be removed from the safety zones without permission. It is anticipated that the safety zones will be discontinued within 30 days, after disinfection and cleaning of affected premises has been approved.

The only recent import of concern into the US from Denmark was bird’s eggs for hatching. In 2001, 4,680 dozen bird’s eggs for hatching (value of $79,000) were imported from Denmark . Through May of 2002, 3,781 bird’s eggs for hatching (value of $72,000) were received. The USDA is preparing an interim rule that will remove Denmark from the list of regions that are considered to be free of exotic Newcastle disease. The effective date will be July 16, 2002 .

Mexico imported no products of concern in 2001 or through May of 2002 from Denmark . In 2001, Canada imported 8,048 fowls (Gallus Dom) for breeding purposes from Denmark . Canada also imported 228 kg of feathers in 2001 and 262 kg of feathers through May of 2002. The value of all of these imports was less than 45 thousand Canadian dollars.

As part of APHIS-PPQ’s agriculture quarantine inspection monitoring, 587 air passengers from Denmark were sampled for items of agricultural interest in fiscal year 2001. None of these passengers were found to be carrying restricted poultry products.
