The Veterinary Services (VS) Regional offices accomplish the VS mission by overseeing 37Area Offices. The Area Offices have responsibility for animal health programs in the United States and its territories, including ports along the U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico. The Mississippi River essentially separates VS Regional offices into Eastern (ER) and Western (WR) Regions. The exception are Louisiana and Minnesota which are in the Eastern region. Each regional office is managed by a Director and two Associate Directors. The Regions use regional epidemiologists and import/export veterinarians to help manage animal health programs. An Administrative Officer oversees Regional budget, federal and state cooperative agreements, personnel, GIS and information technology for each Region. The ER includes 20 Area Offices with responsibility for 27 states, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The WR includes 17 Area Offices with responsibility for 22 states and the Pacific territories.
