New Jersey has a rich agricultural heritage. Known as the “Garden
State”, New Jersey is home to some of the most beautiful farmland
and hard working producers in the region.
In
addition to traditional dairy, poultry, swine and small ruminant
farms, producers engage in many forms of “non-traditional” agriculture.
New
Jersey’s horse industry supports thousands of jobs and is a major
source of tourism, generating substantial revenue for the Garden
State. Our many horse farms account for thousands of acres of
open space.
New
Jersey is strategically located in one of the nation’s largest upscale
consumer seafood markets. For over 300 years, commercial seafood
harvested in New Jersey has helped supply those markets. As the
demand for quality seafood has continued to grow, aquaculture has
helped supplement the wild harvest. There are over 150 licensed
aquaculture farmers in the Garden State.
Every
day, imported animals and animal products from all over the world,
enter the United States through New Jersey’s airports and seaports.
The Port of Newark-Elizabeth is the third largest container port
in the United States. The monitoring of these animals and products
by USDA is essential to protect the health of our nation’s livestock
and crops.
A
growing and diverse urban population creates unique challenges for
safeguarding agriculture in New Jersey and the nation. USDA APHIS
Veterinary Services in New Jersey and the State Division of Animal
Health, work cooperatively to protect animal health and to insure
that New Jersey will continue to be known as the “Garden State”.
