Veterinary Services activities in this area include preventing,
preparing, responding and recovering from emergency animal disease
and disaster situations. Working closely with our New England
state agriculture departments, state veterinarians and livestock
producers, we provide support for controlling or eradicating major
domestic livestock diseases and provide monitoring systems for
preventing the interstate spread of animal diseases. Current disease
eradication programs include efforts directed at cattle brucellosis,
and swine brucellosis; bovine tuberculosis; and pseudorabies in
swine and use the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program
to control scrapie in sheep and goats. We assist many business
entities and citizens with health certification of animals and
animal products for importation and exportation. The New England
area office regulates the importation of animals that enter the
country through land ports along the Canadian border in the ports
