Secretary's Advisory Committee on Animal Health (SACAH)

The Secretary's Advisory Committee on Animal Health considers matters of animal health and broader issues of public concern. This Committee is representative of the greater agricultural community, including animal welfare representatives; nontraditional, organic, and traditional livestock producers; small and minority farmers; and State and Tribal animal health officials.

Purpose

  • Advise the Secretary on strategies, policies, and programs that prevent, control, or eradicate diseases of national significance
  • Lead the dialogue on public health concerns, conservation of natural resources, and the stability of livestock economies
  • Engage the public on:
    • Livestock disease management
    • Traceability strategies
    • Animal health priorities

Authority and Nomination Process

The Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Animal Health has been reestablished pursuant to Agency authority in Departmental Regulation 1043-031 (formerly the Secretary’s Advisory Committee for Foreign Animal and Poultry Diseases).

  • Request for nominations published in Federal Register, June 17, 2010
  • 20 individuals approved to serve as members for a term not to exceed 2 years (August 25, 2012)

History

The SACAH reestablishes the former Secretary’s Advisory Committee for Foreign Animal and Poultry Diseases. The reestablished committee is broader in scope and will provide advice on agricultural matters including:

  • Public health
  • Conservation of natural resources
  • Stability of livestock economies
  • Livestock disease management and traceability strategies
  • Prioritizing animal health issues

To ensure well-rounded advice and recommendations, this Committee represents a broad spectrum of individuals throughout the greater animal health community. Its members will remain culturally, technically, and geographically diverse throughout its tenure.
