APHIS works in a variety of ways to protect and improve the health, quality, and marketability of our nation's animals, animal products and veterinary biologics. This subject area describes many of the diseases facing animals today, as well the steps APHIS is taking to prevent, control, and eliminate those conditions.

As the Nation’s veterinary authority, VS improves the health, productivity, and quality of life for animals and people, and maintains and promotes the safety and availability of animals, animal products, and veterinary biologics. VS integrates One Health principles with our USDA business objectives by contributing leadership, expertise, infrastructure, networks, and systems to collaborate effectively with local, State, Tribal, national, and international partners. Our comprehensive and integrated on-farm surveillance activities provide us the capability to achieve national goals for animal disease prevention, detection, and early response.

VS Area Offices

VS Area Offices carry out the VS mission at the state level across the United States. Some of the programs and services provided include:

  • Import Inspections
  • Disease Surveillance
  • Veterinary Accreditation
  • Responding to Animal Health Emergencies
  • Cervidae TB Accreditation
  • Scrapie Program
  • Informational Presentations and Materials
  • Animal Health Monitoring Programs

Complete and signed International Health Certificates for the export of animals from the United States must be endorsed by a Veterinary Services area office. If you have questions or concerns regarding regulations for exporting animals or animal products to a foreign country, you should contact the VS area office in the State from which the animals or products will be exported.
